Next generation drives

The times of bone-rattling, noisy washing machines with roaring spin cycles that resemble a Boeing taking off, while shaking the entire house, are over.

A lot of technological advances have gone into the motors that drive today’s washing machines. Instead of the heavy, mechanical contraptions of yesteryear, today’s washing machine motors are very much from the digital age.

Fisher & Paykel’s SmartDrive, found on all its washing machine ranges, includes an on-board computer to control a direct drive motor that removes the need for belts, pulleys and the traditional block of concrete that keeps the machine from bouncing down the road during the spin cycle. Yes, there is actually a concrete block inside older washing machines! The SmartDrive technology also senses each load and adjusts water usage accordingly.

The latest Samsung front loaders feature a digital inverter motor, which is brushless, so runs quieter and uses less energy than conventional washing machine motors.

With fewer moving parts, there are less chance of things going wrong with machines powered by these modern motors. So they should last longer and cost less to maintain. And since they use less water and energy, they are cheaper to run - something both your wallet and the planet will be grateful for.

Take control - from anywhere

The laundry has not been left behind in the smart home revolution either. It is now possible to connect your washing machine to your wi-fi network and control it with your phone from anywhere you like.

This is possible with Samsung’s Smart Control technology that lets you control and monitor your washing machine using a smartphone app. You can start or pause your washing, plus see how much time is left on the cycle and get an alert once it’s done. Smart Control is available on the WW9000H front loader range.

You can also troubleshoot issues with your machine from your smartphone with Samsung’s Smart Check automatic error-monitoring system, which is available on the AddWash, WW7000H and WW5000H ranges. The system detects and diagnoses issues and provides easy troubleshooting suggestions saving you time, plus the cost and hassle of unnecessary service callouts.

Controlling your machine in person is becoming easier as well. Models, like the Samsung WW9000H, now feature a large, full colour touchscreen rather than an assortment of confusing dials and buttons. This makes it simpler to select the right settings for your washing, such as the water temperature, spin speed and type of detergent being used. With an easy-to-read LCD display it’s also to keep an eye of the progress of your cycle.

Adding errant items

What’s one of the greatest annoyances of laundry day? Apart from that sudden rain burst that comes out of nowhere right when your washing is almost dry on the line, what can be more rage inducing than realising you’ve left that shirt you need tomorrow out of the load you’ve just put on?

The latest washing machine technology can now iron out that wrinkle for good.

With Samsung’s AddWash feature, you can easily add any forgotten items after a cycle has already started. AddWash found on a number of the latest Samsung front loading machines, lets you pause the wash cycle and pop any last minute laundry into the machine through a handy, separate hatch in the machine’s door. The washing will then carry on from where it left off. You can also top-up your washing power and fabric softener through the AddWash door, or add items that only need a rinse or a spin.

Fisher & Paykel offers a similar function on some of its machines. The Add a Garment feature on its WashSmart front loader allows you to pause your wash cycle, open the door and add or remove items. And then carry on washing.

Enjoy the silence

How about a bit of peace and quiet for those evening loads, while you’re trying to catch up on the newest Netflix sensation on your smart TV.

Well, the latest washing machines have you sorted with innovations that keep noise and vibration to a minimum.

As mentioned before, with fewer moving parts Fisher & Paykel’s SmartDrive and Samsung’s digital inverter motor get on with business with less vibration and super quietly.

Latest Samsung appliances also sport the company’s VRT Plus technology which uses a 3D vibration sensor to keep the drum balanced, even at higher spin speeds, keeping noise and vibration low.

So no more banging and rocking from the laundry while you’re trying to enjoy your Netflix session…

Faster, better washes

Not only are the latest washing motors quieter and more energy efficient, they are also better overall at doing what they’re meant to - clean your clothes.

Samsung front loaders boast hi-tech features like Bubblewash, which turns detergent into bubbles that penetrate fabric further to remove dirt, and Speed Spray, which rinses clothes using powerful jets to shorten washing times.

With Fisher & Paykel’s SmartDrive you get fast spin speeds of up to 1100 rpm, keeping the spin cycle shorter while removing water more effectively.

If doing the washing is still one of your least enjoyable chores, perhaps it’s time to do the smart thing and get a shiny new washing machine in your laundry soon, while you take a load off.

How to choose a washing machine

There are a lot of options when it comes to picking a washing machine and weighing them all up can become overwhelming. Here are some useful tips to help you choose.

Type of washing machine

Top loading, front-loading or a washer-dryer combo? The type of washing machine you choose will make a big difference.
If you have a smaller space, a front loading washing machine might suit you better because it can be stacked with a dryer, while a washer-dryer combo is ideal for apartments and cramped spaces.
If you want ease-of-access as you’re putting clothes in or taking them out, a top loader could be for you because you don’t have to bend to load it as you would with a front loading machine.

Size?

Once you decide what kind of machine works best, you will need to choose a size. Match the size of a washing machine to the size of your family. For a single person or a couple, go for 5kg or smaller model. For a three to four person household, choose a 5 to 7.5kg machine. And for five or more people, you’ll need at least an 8kg machine.

Energy and water efficiency

If conserving water is a priority, keep in mind that front loaders tend to use less water than top loaders. Also take into consideration a washing machine’s efficiency star ratings - the more stars it has, the more efficient it is. While models with a lower rating may cost less upfront, more energy and water efficient washing machines can lower water and power bills in the long term.
